Preparing for College

College Search

On CollegeBoard, there’s a search engine that allows students to filter and choose what kind of schools they’re interested in. It also shows information and quick stats of the college, such as deadlines or campus life.

Test Prep

SAT and ACT are two types of standardized tests used for college admissions and scholarships. What they do is test your skills in basic subjects, such as Math or English, and are typically taken during junior or senior year. Colleges don’t have a preference one of type over the other.

Advanced Placement (AP)

If your high school offers AP courses, they allow students to earn college credits. Each college has a different criteria on how credits would be awarded, such as how high the students’ score, the type of subject, and number of credits. This benefits students to be ahead in their college career.

Recommendation Letter

Some colleges require students to submit recommendations or reference letters for their applications. The following button can prep students on what they should know and how to ask for a letter.

After Getting Admitted to College

Apply for Financial Aid

If money is difficult to come by, students can apply for financial aid to receive grants and/or loans from the state government on a need-basis. Navigate through the website to learn what types of aid is offered and how to apply. Make sure to check the requirements to qualify for FAFSA. If students aren’t qualified for FAFSA, such as non-citizens, they can apply for TAFSA (for students in Texas) for a chance to receive aid.

Scholarships

Applying for scholarships offers students a chance to earn money for college. It can be need-based or merit-based, and it can include representing students’ values/beliefs. The following button can take you to a list of sites to search for scholarships!
